With Oculus’ recent update to their immensely popular Oculus Rift headset, the Oculus Rift S serves as the new entry point for a VR headset if you are looking to enter the world of VR gaming. The Oculus Rift S manages to bring a few updates over the older Rift. The Insight system present in the headset allows for the tracking of the handheld controller without the need for a complicated external camera system and reducing the number of wires connected to your PC, taking up all of the available USB ports.

Also, the screen has seen an update to a higher resolution, making for a crisp VR experience, but it comes at the cost of a slight drop in the refresh rate, which might cause you to notice flickering and lead to motion sickness. How to check if your PC supports the Oculus Rift or Rift S?

The Oculus Rift S will be fairly demanding on your PC, considering the required number of resources to render the complete environment for VR games. If you are upgrading from the previous-gen Oculus Rift headset, you will be delighted to hear that the PC supporting that headset will still manage to run it considering the steps Oculus has taken to ensure compatibility.

To determine if your PC will be able to run games on the Oculus Rift S, you will need to find out the components of your PC first. Follow these steps to find out your PC’s specs from your system’s settings:

1. On the bottom left of your screen, click on the Windows Start Menu Icon.

2. Click on the settings icon directly above the power button on the start menu.

3. Once the settings window opens, click on the first section named System.

4. On the left sidebar, scroll down and click on the About section.

5. In this section, you will be able to find the processor in your system, and the amount of RAM installed.

6. Now head on over to the start menu and click on the search bar.

7. Type in “Device Manager” in the search field and click on the application that matches the name in the results.

8. Once the window opens, head on to the Display Adapters option and click it to reveal the GPU installed in your system.

Once you have completed the steps above, compare your system specs with the Oculus Rift S’ minimum requirements. A supporter graphics card, for reference, will have a higher number than the stated spec. For example, if you have a GTX 1070 installed, then your graphics card will manage to run the headset, while a GTX 950 will not. The same applies to the CPU. As for RAM, anything above 8 GB will do fine.

Best Build for the Oculus Rift S

If you are planning to pursue the path of VR gaming, the Oculus Rift S is an excellent choice, provided you have a PC capable of running it. If you don’t have a compatible PC or looking to build one, we recommend building a PC for as little as $500.

At this price, we would recommend an all AMD build with the six-core Ryzen 5 2600 and the Radeon 5500XT with 8 GB of VRAM for the $500 budget. The build will let you enter the world of VR gaming, with many modern titles at lower settings.

If you want to get the best experience, though, Nvidia’s RTX 2070 Super or higher along with a Ryzen 5 3600 will allow you to play even the most demanding titles with ease. You will also need at least 16 GB of RAM to achieve a lag-free experience. A high capacity SSD will also allow for loading your games quickly.

We strongly recommend keeping a high budget for VR as it will ensure a smooth and stutter-free experience, which will prevent you from experiencing motion sickness and other problems. After all, VR gaming is expensive, considering the Oculus Rift S headset itself costs $400.
